The madhouse studio proudly announces the opening of the new 12x12x12 gallery in the front of the store. It is a small works gallery showcasing artists from around the country. Twelve pieces on display and all artwork is 12" by 12". Last month was our inaugural exhibit, "Strange Brain" by emerging artists Max Alex and Isahiah Pottle. Each piece is a collaboration between the two as they passed the artwork back and forth, each inspired by the previous artist’s stroke of hand. The result, a beautiful collision of two creative strange brains. 7 of the 12 pieces have sold. To see the rest of the show before it comes down, stop in before July 1st.

Next up for this month is collage artist Suzanne Louise who describes her collage collection "Last Look" like this:

I am very interested in signs, symbols, art history, iconography, fate and chance. My work is layered with specific images from artists I like and random images. I enjoy the process of creating relationships between different times, artists and cultures. I think my process and end product is very similar to writing haiku. They are a form of visual haiku. This particular body of work "Last Look" is site specific, meaning that I created with the energy of Mad Girl World in mind.

Hi madpeeps,

madgirl here....What's new in the world of madness? well three exciting things....

1. I just finished a photo shoot with Jill McGowan's for her fall catalog. I styled the photo shoot and provided all the madaccesories to compliment her "great white shirt", it included hats, gloves, shoes, purses and jewelry. Jill's catalog will be out in about 5 weeks. It was sooooooo much fun! This will be amazing exposure and I really thank Jill and her sister Jolene for thinking of me to hire. I am honored. I have been selling the one of a kind things I made for the shoot at the madhouse and they have been flying out the door. :)

2. I have begun the process of transitioning our umbrella company name to madworld designs (more user friendly to the madman in the big wide world). you will slowly see all web and print material transition. This of course takes a while so in the meantime old emails and websites are linked so we don't lose connection with anyone. Yah for technology. Thank you Thank you to Nick Callanan at No Umbrella Media. I couldn't ask for a better web manager.

3. The madness is now available wholesale to fun colorful stores outside the Portland Maine area. Here is the link to the wholesale linesheet. I am trying to get the word out, so if you know of anyone who owns a store with fun colorful style that might be a good match please let me know so I can contact them. meredith@madworlddesigns.com It is so exciting to move to grow the next level of owning a lifestyle brand company. "live your chaos. love the madness" I live this mantra daily......happy spring everyone xoxoxox madgirl

Water Closet Gallery presents: Sam Gilbert's Baseband, February First Friday Artwalk

Please join us for the First Friday Art Walk on February 4th from 5-10 pm at the Madhouse 275 Commercial St., Portland, Maine.

Exhibit Details - Baseband consists of a combination of 2-D and 3-D pieces tied together with common materials. It includes a sculptural piece crafted from cardboard and hot glue which has been covered in the tape taken from inside of VHS tapes as well as black electrical tape. The 2-D images are individual units, but together make up a series. They are also made with this tape which I have combined with white paper and wood for the structure of the frames. The idea behind the project is to recycle someone's Jessica Alba obsession and use the material that would produce an image on a TV to create images and dimensions that are unique to the material itself. The tape has a brilliant reflective sheen to it that I was pleasently surprised to find upon dissecting a tape and which, interestingly, contrasts with the dull, faded picture that would appear were the VHS's played through a VCR.

Title: Baseband

Artist: Sam Gilbert
Materials: VHS tape, paper, cardboard and wood

Thank you to everyone who visited me during the daily elf hours from 4-8pm for the whole month of December. Families and individuals stopped in with toys, stocking stuffers, cookies, candy, dinner, smiles and my favorite, "elf nog".

The donations went to Toys for Tots and Barbara Bush Childrens Hospital. It was a magical experience. I met so many wonderful new people and was so proud of the community support behind the project. Plans are already circulating on next year and how the project can include others who would like to sew recycled mad elf stockings with me. I would be honored. And lastly here's to the children whose eminent smiles I felt all the way from the pom pom on my head to the jingle bells on my toes as walked around the studio in elfin madness.

Thank you again to all who helped. Santa was watching.

Till next December.
